Welcome to art from scratch!

We’re a creative space for art classes and events, based in Kingston and open to the greater Hobart community. Our goal is to offer fun, welcoming experiences that bring people together—no matter your age or skill level.

At afs, we believe art isn’t just something you learn, but a natural part of being human. Through making art, we connect with ourselves, our stories, and each other.

We’re here to help you tap into that creative spark and enjoy the simple joy of making. Our classes, workshops, and events are all about exploring, experimenting, and above all playing!

Meet the Team

Yilian Basser

Yilian Basser is a professional teacher and practicing artist, specialising in classical painting, drawing, and art of the human body. She founded afs in 2018 as a platform to share her love of art, and foster community connections. Since then, she has built trusting relationships with a broad range of students and organisations, as a skilled and compassionate tutor and group facilitator.

Pengbo Wu

Pengbo Wu is a contemporary artist with a Master of Fine Arts from Guangxi Art University, where he also lectured in watercolour. He specialises in painting and Chinese calligraphy. He regularly exhibits work internationally. Through his practice and teaching, Pengbo channels a childlike explorative and joyful approach to art making, drawing from the beauty of life and the world around us.

Ellie Panarettos

Ellie Panarettos is an information manager, business analyst, and our wonder woman behind the scenes. She is passionate about keeping things operating smoothly and making sure our community members have the best possible experience connecting with us. In addition to her impressive many other qualifications, she also studied art at university and has a deep respect for its ability to enrich our lives.
