This class is now underway, please contact us directly regarding late bookings.

The Elements of Art are the fundamental building blocks of all art making. Join us, over seven weeks to get to know The Elements and incorporate them in your own art practice! Each week we will focus on a different Element, experimenting with student’s chosen painting media, and discussing  various artists’ works. Classes will include exercises to help understand, apply and envisage possibilities for using each element, technical instruction around your chosen medium and the making of effective and engaging artworks, and discussions around ways in which great artist have used The Elements to make their works sing!

In this course:

Week 1 – Line: explore beautiful, expressive and diverse lines.

Week 2 – Shape: experiment with the various methods and possibilities for the expression of different shapes.

Week 3 – Form: study light and shadow, and how it creates form.

Week 4 – Value: learn to map value relationships, and the way value influences depth, composition and mood.

Week 5 – Colour: explore colour harmonies and contrasts, relationships and meanings.

Week 6 – Space: play with perspective, layering, and the space of the picture plane itself.

Week 7 – Texture: experiment with creating the illusion of texture, and incorporating different media to vary the texture of the paint, or surface.

There will, of course, be some cross over of The Elements, but each week will focus on one in particular, whilst incorporating others.

Students may follow the set exercises from the course each week. Otherwise, you are invited to bring your own artworks along, to incorporate the exercises directly; with the opportunity for critique/discussion.
